Time for a camera upgrade

Introduction

After a few months of using a Canon EOS 50D I decided to upgrade to something a bit newer. After some deliberation, I got the short list down to the 80D and 2000D. The used price for a body only was within my budget.

The 2000D won on the basis that it was still on sale today, is an entry level DSLR and would allow me to get an additional lens. In this casea the Canon EF 50mm.

I brought the camera body and lens from the CEX online store. I’ve ordered a few things from CEX online and always received a great service. I would highly recommend checking them out. It only took a couple of days to arrive. The camera body was in excellent condition and included the original box, battery, macro SD card and manual.

First Impressions

The 2000D is about half the weight of the 50D, mainly due to the fact that the 50D body is weathered. It makes a big difference to the weight of the camera. The 2000D is a lot easier to handle.

The other main differences are:

  • The colour balance and profiles are much better
  • The shutter button is a lot lighter
  • Wireless connectivity
  • It uses macro SD cards not Compact Flash

I’ve taken a few different types of pictures from some of my favourite locations and included some of them in the gallery above. I use Lightroom to adjust the photos but the adjustments are light and are mainly Lens Correction, Straighten image, Set Camera Colour Profile and Auto Correction.

I’ve looked at whether I should continue to use RAW or switch to JPEG and will consider it once I get better at taking pictures with the correct camera settings.

The other discovery I made recently is Adobe Portfolio. This is free if you have any Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. I use Lightroom Mobile which comes with 100GB of Cloud storage for £45 a year. I’m now setting up a free portfolio which I’ll share in the near future. I can set upto 5 portfolio sites for free. Not bad as a free offering.
