Wiltshire
Introduction
Silbury Hill in Wiltshire is one of the most mysterious ancient monuments in the UK. This massive, man-made mound, standing 30 meters high, dates back over 4,000 years and remains an enigma to archaeologists. Located near Avebury, Silbury Hill is part of a rich landscape of prehistoric sites.
Visitors can’t climb the hill, but there are nearby footpaths that offer great views. These paths also connect to other significant sites, like the Avebury stone circle, West Kennet Long Barrow, and the Sanctuary. Exploring these trails gives you a chance to experience the incredible history of this ancient landscape up close.

There are a few things I would recommend to get good shots at Silbury Hill. I’ve listed a few of them below.
Capture at different times of the day. Early morning or late afternoon light can create beautiful shadows and highlight the texture of the hill. Sunset and sunrise can also add dramatic colors to the sky. In August I’ve been visiting the site between 19:30 and 21:00.
Include the Surrounding Landscape. Silbury Hill is best appreciated in context with its surroundings. Step back to capture wide-angle shots that include the hill with nearby fields, trees, or other ancient sites.
Experiment with Angles. Try shooting from different heights and angles. A lower angle can make the hill appear more imposing, while higher viewpoints might give a better sense of its scale. Walking to the top of the ridge line to over look the site gives you a great shot of the landscape around the hill.
Consider Weather and Seasons. Overcast skies can add a moody atmosphere, while clear skies highlight the monument’s details. Seasonal changes, like a frosty winter morning or a lush green summer, can add unique character to your shots.
