Brixham

Introduction

This is a place I’ve wanted to visit for a while. It’s been on my adventures list for quite some time. Several friends have recommended it as a place to photograph along with another in the Brixham area, Coleton Fishacre. It was the summer home for Agatha Christie, the famous crime author.

Greenway covers an extensive area overlooking the river Dart and has a 1930s house complete with the original contents that once belonged to the Author. It’s set in some fabulous grounds with walks down to the river Dart and a boat house where you can catch a ferry. It contains several gardens, including a lovely walled garden. In the cafe area, look out for the small birds that fly aroundafter crumbs. There were a lot of Robins and Chaffinch and the odd thrush. They make a good photo opportunity.

One thing to highlight is that if you drive there you will need to book a car parking slot. Parking is limited and you can’t just turn up. They also like you to restrict your visit by car to three hours, which is plenty of time to visit the house and gardens. There is a ferry option as well.

I’ve put some link’s in the further information section at the bottom of the blog.

Photo Opportunity

After my recent festivals this was a lot more within my comfort zone. The weather was good and I did use a polarised filter for most of the shots. There were a few people around and it got busy around lunchtime so some of the shots I wanted to take were not practical.

I have not yet mastered the art of taking indoor shots and making them both interesting and different. As with a few houses I’ve been too there is usually a set route and so you are guided around from room to room with little chance of doing anything different.

One of the things that pleased me were the bird shots. I had a coffee when I first got there and noticed them flying everywhere so I got my camera setup and placed it on the table ready to shoot. I did manage to get some nice pictures and could have stayed there for hours just doing that.
