Westonbirt
Introduction
As we get nearer to Easter, Spring has finally arrived. This means more positive weather and some colour. Its also an opportunity for me to try close up or macro photography.
For this blog I’ve posted the photos taken at the last trip to Westonbirt. It’s a great place to find some variety in the type of shots you can take and as the colour has started arrive, I have begun to practice close up shots. These add a bit more variety to the type of photo shoots I’ve been doing and allow me to emphasis individual flowers or plants.

Shot Selection
One of the things I’ve been trying to think of in more recent shoots is shot selection. Not just in composition or orientation but also based on the subject I’m photographing. This now includes close up photos.
Like most camers my Canon 50D DSLR has a number of scene modes that help you take the best photo for that type. I’ve now got into the habit of thinking ahead and selecting the best scene mode. This does mean that taking these types of pictures becomes much easier without the need for constant manual adjustment.
At present I’m using the standard kit lens (18mm to 55mm) which allows me to take some good close up, well balanced shots. One problem I’ve had is that at maximum zoom I do start to get a little camera shake, so in future if I want the really close up pictures I’ll need to use a tripod.
I have also bought a set of macro extension tubes to try out. These were £20 and are a much cheaper option to a lens I might not use a great deal. I’ll write a separate post on the results of trying those out.
