Lacock
Introduction
Lacock Is a ten minute drive from Chippenham and somewhere I’ve previously taken family and friends when they visit. It always goes down well. It has a number of decent places to eat, great views and familiar movie and TV drama locations but can get very busy in Spring and Summer.
There is more information in the links section below.
The Abbey Gardens
I’ve not really paid much attention to the Abbey and gardens until a few months ago when I was looking for location to practice taking pictures. There are landscapes, flower gardens, a pond, a stream and the Abbey itself. I’ve been back a few times since then and most recently discovered a family of squirrels that live in the garden.

Photo opportunity
The pictures in the gallery are mostly from the last visit and were taken with a Canon EOS 50D DSLR that I acquired recently. I’m still getting used to it but the picture quality is noticeably better than my Sony bridge camera. The new camera also gives me the option to capture pictures in RAW format which offers more editing possibilities in Lightroom.
On the previous visit I discovered that a family of squirrels lived amongst the trees in the abbey gardens and were busy feeding. I took quite a few pictures with my bridge camera only to discover the following:
- Squirrels are fascinating to watch
- Squirrels move very quickly
- It gets very cold staying still for an hour taking pictures
It was only once I got home and processed the images that I found quite a few of them were out of focus. Something to remedy for next time. I need to be better prepared for this type of photo. Perhaps a wildlife photography course would be useful.
